Topic will be 'Protecting Earth's Environment' Speaker: Eliza Olson Eliza will share with us the importance of our role as women in taking leadership in protecting the Earth's Environment. Speakers Bio: Eliza is the Founding President of Burns Bog Conservation Society in Delta. She was born in Meadow Lake, Sask. Eliza has a B.Ed. degree from Simon Fraser University. Eliza is the proud mother of two daughters and one granddaughter. She founded the Burns Bog Conservation Society 21 years ago with 19 other people. The purpose of the Society is to educate the community about the ecological value of Burns Bog and to protect the Bog. Eliza is a founding member of Protect Our Children Group and she sits on the Board of Directors. Protect Our Children Group is an organization dedicated to helping parents with troubled children. She is a founding member of the Delta Toastmaster’s Club 1924. Eliza was a director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce for nine years. Eliza is a member of the North Delta University Women’s Club, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Surrey Retired Teachers’ Association and the Delta Retired Teacher’s Association. She is also a founding member of the Burns Bog Conservation Foundation. The Foundation was set up at the direction of the Society. The purpose of the Foundation is to build an endowment fund and a capital fund to support the educational activities of the Society and to build an interpretive or education centre relating to Burns Bog. In 2000 she was awarded the Delta Toastmasters Club 1924, Communications 2000 Award. This award is presented to individuals who have given outstanding service as a volunteer in a community with a non-profit organization. She has received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and the Canada125 Medal for her work to protect Burns Bog. The Surrey Teachers’ Association presented her with a Lifetime Membership for her commitment to educating young people about the ecological treasure (Burns Bog) in their backyard. Eliza was the first person to receive the Volunteer for Direct Access & Raffle Award presented by the BC Association for Charitable Gaming. Besides the Canadian Geographic Silver Award for Conservation, Eliza received the Alumni of Distinction Award from Vancouver Community College in 2004. She was one of the first people to be nominated for this award that was implemented as part of the Vancouver Community College’s fortieth anniversary celebrations. In 2006, she received Earthday Canada’s Hometown Hero’s award. This is a national award presented to one person annually. The Delta Chamber of Commerce recognized Eliza as their Citizen of the Year for 2006. The Yves Rocher Foundation, an international organization located in Paris, France awarded her the Bronze Award, February, 28, 2007 for their “Women of the Earth” awards. September 2008, the North Delta Rotary Club on behalf of the Rotary International Foundation, gave Eliza the Paul Harris Fellow award for her work for the Society. Eliza has been the inspiration behind several publications about Burns Bog produced by the Society. These include the Teacher’s Guide to Burns Bog, an elementary book for teachers, The Comprehensive Guide to Burns Bog, and the Companion to the Comprehensive Guide to Burns Bog and The Teacher’s Resource Guide to Sandhill Cranes. International Bog Day came about because Eliza attended a conference in Scotland in 1995 where International Bog Day began sixteen years ago. Celebrating Women & the Spirit of the Cranes, is an awards event recognizing women in the community who emulate the qualities attributed to women through association with cranes throughout the ages. This was inspired by the realization that the Sandhill cranes return to Burns Bog by International Women’s Day. Please note:The Burns Bog Society is hosting special events Sept 24 Gala Fundraiser and 26 Jog for the Bog with special guest Ray Zahab, visit their website for more information.http://www.burnsbog.org/events/
